Leave it to LEGO to come up with the most brilliant and exciting new themes for their much-loved and treasured LEGO sets. Both LEGO and Disney are joining together to make Toy Story LEGO sets that are to be released in January 2010. It’s the new anticipated movie of Toy Story 3 that has given LEGO its inspiration to make these Toy Story themed sets.

LEGO is set to release 6 new sets in January, all centered around different characters and themes from the Toy Story movies. Expect to see all of your favorite Toy Story friends including the famous Buzz and Woody, Jessie and Stinky Pete, and the Army Men and Little Green Men. Fans anxiously await the January 1st release date, as many of these figurines have been showcased at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con.

These Toy Story 3 sets reach out to the ages of 6-12 or 7-14, depending on the size and difficulty of the LEGO sets. The most anticipated set is Woody’s Roundup (7594), which focuses on bringing Woody’s TV show to life for LEGO builders. Woody’s Roundup set comes with 4 figurines, including Woody, Jessie, Bullseye, and The Prospector, along with all the pieces needed to build the sheriff’s office and jail.

For Buzz Lightyear fans, the LEGO choices are plentiful. Buyers can choose the Construct-A-Buzz (7592) which allows them to build a detailed Buzz Lightyear at a larger scale size, equipped with all his gadgets and gear. Or, fans can build the famous Star Command Ship that has been featured in the Toy Story movies with Buzz’s Star Command Ship set (7593).

• Adequate restraints: You should look for an infant car seat that would safely harness your child at five points- each shoulder, each thigh, and the final strap should be between your baby’s legs.
• It has a LATCH system: (short for Lower Anchors & Tethers for Children) this is designed to make installation much easier by directly attaching it to the vehicle, instead of using a seat belt to secure it.
• It is washable: Where there is a baby, a mess is soon to follow and it would be wise to buy a car seat with a machine-washable detachable cover.
• It is comfortable: The seat should be well padded and have plenty of head support, giving your child a much better ride to enjoy.

Up to eight weeks old your babies favourite sight and sounds are human faces and voices, they will also enjoy watching brightly coloured mobiles, wind-chimes and cot-toys, if clearly in view, they will focus best on hand-held toys that are 8 inches from their face and will respond to soft music and being rocked gently.

At twelve weeks your baby can focus for longer on mobiles and cot-toys, they will also be able to see them at a greater distance. He will show a preference for bright colours and look at them for longer, but he will still have more interest in human faces and large pictures of faces, he will also enjoy wrist rattles, musical toys and squeaky toys.

From three to six months he will start to grasp a toy that is placed in his hand, and will begin to reach for toys. Your babies favourite early toys will be lightweight rattles and colourful teething rings, he will have learned to use both hands and will start to play with foam bricks, soft balls, cuddly soft toys or grip-toys with an internal squeak.

He will love floor activities up to the age of nine months, large bright activity quilts are a good idea, as is a activity centres. He will also love colourful toys with interesting designs and textures to study during quiet play, and of course, noisy toys for rattling and banging will have them enjoying and laughing.

Their first books should be brightly illustrated and made from “Chew Proof” card or Textured Fabrics, push and pull along toys will encourage walking and be a great aid for balancing.

Learning to walk is a fabulous time for your baby, but can be testing on you, as they will be everywhere, and while trying out their newfound skill, there will be bumps, cries and tears, and some of those will be yours.

The average ages for walking is between nine and thirteen months, but remember, this is only guideline so don’t be concerned if they’re not quite on the move yet.

The timing is determined by your baby’s muscle strength, his ability to balance and most importantly, his personality, his motivation and confidence. The weight of your baby may also play a part; a heavier baby will take longer to get up on their feet.

Give plenty of praise when he starts walking, they need encouragement just like we do, but don’t try to rush him along if he’s not quite ready, if he is pushed to quickly he may go back to crawling until he feels ready to give it another go.

Walking Aids or ‘Walkers’ come in many shapes and sizes, from simple baby learning toys such as Building Block Trolleys to Walkers that develop from simple aids to ride on toys, as you toddler’s skills develop.

Baby ride on toys, are great for developing and strengthening the muscles in his legs and arms, the best one of all, has to be The Rocking Horse. This is excellent for learning to keep their balance and start their pretend play, there are others such as sea-saw and trikes, but you can’t beat the classics.

This form of play benefits all toddlers. It improves mood, appetite and quality of sleep and brings better general health, it also develops their muscles, increases their strength and agility, and improves their co-ordination,

While your baby is still crawling, shoes are largely there for decoration, although it’s important that they are not too small.

When children start to walk, they often curl their toes, so it’s better for children to go barefoot or wear socks for as long as possible. The bones in a child’s feet are very soft and can easily be damage, which can lead to posture problems.

Wait until your child is walking unaided, and ready to walk outside, before buying his first pair of shoes and please get his feet measured by someone who’s properly qualified.

But it’s not just baby games that your baby will need, he’ll also enjoy physical contact and will enjoy being massaged, and this will help relax your baby, keep his joints flexible and encourage muscle coordination.

Massage will also give you confidence in handling your baby and help you get to know him.

Ask your doctor about massaging your baby, it is important to get the right information before you start.

Food is a brilliant way for children to learn it stimulates your baby’s sense of taste and smell by allowing him a wide variety of tastes and textures, it is important to allow your baby to experiment and see how your baby reacts to different foods and varying taste.

Eating food with his hands is natural and beneficial, and should be encourage.

So many children come to fear food by having to eat everything on the plate, others become fussy eaters through not being taught to experiment with food.

Most importantly remember that you are your baby’s super hero; he looks up to you for the best start in life and what you do and how you react in his environment, will be reflected in him, he will follow in your footsteps.

I’ve seen quite a few references to common bike types on the internet on informational sites, bike manufacturer sites and on merchant sites (where you actually buy the bikes online). You will find that the names for the bike categories or bicycle types will differ somewhat on each web site.

The listing below is intended to summarize the most common or most popular bicycle types using the most commonly used names (in the US) for the various bicycle types or categories.

Common Bike Types

* Mountain Bikes are designed of “off road” riding and are great for use on back country trails, hills and ravines. Mountain bikes are also popular as all purpose bikes for use on roads, paved and crushed stone trails as well as rugged trails due to their durability. One of the more important considerations when choosing a mountain bike is the type of suspension that is best for your needs. There are rigid mountain bikes which have no suspension, hard tail mountain bikes which have front suspension but no rear suspension and full suspension models.

* Road Bikes are designed for use on roads, tracks and well maintained bike trails. For many years this category was referred to as 10 speed bikes. Today most of these bikes have 3 sprockets in front and multiple sprockets in back so they normally have more than 10 speeds. There are also a number of different types (or sub categories) of road bikes such as Racing Bikes, Touring Bikes and Sport Bikes.

* Hybrid Bicycles are a cross between different bicycle types. The most common reference is usually the cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. These bikes usually have tires that are thinner than a mountain bike but wider than a typical road bike (700x35c is common), the handle bars are more like a mountain bike and you sit up straighter than on a road bike. Some hybrid bikes are designed for comfort and all purpose use and many come with shock absorbers (front and/or under the seat) and comfortable seats.

* Recumbent Bicycles (also referred to as bents) take advantage of reduced wind resistance, and are fast and comfortable. Recumbent riders sit in a reclined position as opposed to the upright or forward leaning positions of more traditional bikes. Bents are becoming much more popular than in the past and are suited well for touring, bike trails (not rugged mountain trails) and roads. There are many different configurations of recumbent bikes. There are Short Wheel Base (SWB) where the pedals are above the front wheel, Long Wheel Base (LWB) where the pedals are behind the front wheel, Above Seat Steering (ASS) where the handlebars are usually about chest high, and Under Seat Steering (USS) where the steering is under the riders seat (less common). There are also tandem recumbents in addition to recumbent trikes with the double wheels in front or in back.

* BMX & Freestyle Bikes BMX bikes are designed for off road racing on dirt tracks, Freestyle and Jump Bikes (in the same general category) are designed for performing stunts and tricks and jumping ramps. These are usually (but not always) 20 inch bikes with upright handlebars, knobby tires, rear hand brakes and, in some cases, additional front brakes and pegs for stunts.

* Cruiser Bicycles (or beach cruisers) are the old style or classic bikes with balloon tires and upright seating position that were popular in the US until around the late 50s. These bikes are comfortable, sturdy, durable and can handle a variety of different terrains. Most cruisers are heavy and usually have just one speed (the downside to their durability).

* Kids Bikes are another category altogether. Kids bikes really come in a variety of different styles and sizes. Bikes for kids usually include the 10 inch to 16 inch size bicycles (with or without training wheels) but older kids may also prefer any of the other bike categories above (mountain bikes, bmx, road bikes, etc.) This category may also include tricycles, scooters, ride-on toys, push toys and other adult bicycle accessories for children such as child seats, bike trailers and kid carriages, and trailer bikes

Miscellaneous – Other Popular but Less Common Bicycle Types

OK, now that we’ve covered the most common and most popular bicycle categories, let’s see what else is out there. There is no way that I can cover all of the bike and bike-like types of machines that have been created, invented or are available to purchase, but the list below does cover some of the additional bike or bike-like categories that are fairly popular.

* Chopper Bicycles or Low-Rider Bikes – These are usually flashy custom build bikes with extended forks and lots of chrome and/or custom paint jobs that are designed be comfortable and to attract attention.

* Folding Bikes – These bikes are designed to fold into a light and compact package for commuting and longer trips where storage is a factor.

* Commuter Bikes can be any bicycle type depending on how you are commuting. If you are commuting to work by roads, a road bike might be the best choice, if you are commuting by side roads and bike trails a hybrid or mountain bike may be your choice. What I have found here in the suburbs is that if you are commuting to the train station, leaving your bike at the station, and then taking the train to work, most people choose a “beater” (a stripped down bike with little value) to leave locked at the train station.

* Electric Bikes come in a variety of styles but most resemble mountain, hybrid or cruiser bikes. These bikes are human powered (you pedal them like a regular bike) but have a supplemental battery powered motor for help on hills or when you need a break. The batteries are rechargeable and have a limited range (usually around 35 miles)

* Utility Bikes can be any bicycle type that is practical for short commutes and everyday errands as opposed to use for recreation or fitness. Utility bikes often include luggage carriers, baskets and/or bike bags.
